"Tragedy at Winter Quarters"

Located at the Mormon Trail Visitors Center at Historic Winter Quarters, 3215 State Street (NE-Map)

Tragedy at Winter Quarters by Avard Fairbanks

The statue (by Avard Fairbanks) was created as a tribute to the thousands of early Mormon immigrants that died on their way west to Utah.  The Mormon Cemetery at the Mormon Trail Visitors Center at Historic Winter Quarters in Florence is the final resting place for many of the immigrants that could not make it any further.  During the stay of the Mormons, over half of the graves in the cemetery were for children under the age of three years.
